Acupuncture, one of the main forms of therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been practiced for at least 2,500 years. In acupuncture, certain points on the body associated with energy channels or “meridians” are stimulated by the insertion of super fine needles, that range from 0.12mm to 0.30mm. If compared to a normal hypodermic needle at 29mm, acupuncture needles are barely felt at all. The points can be needled between 15 and 90 degrees relative to the skin’s surface, depending on treatment.

Acupuncture restores health by removing energy imbalances and blockages in the body. TCM practitioners work with the vital force or energy called Qi. (pronounced “chee”) It flows throughout the body between the skin and the internal organs, and along channels or pathways called meridians. Qi regulates the spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical harmony of the body by keeping the forces of yin and yang in balance. Yang is a principle of heat, activity, brightness, outwardness, while yin represents coldness, passivity, darkness, interiority, etc. TCM does not try to eliminate either yin or yang, but to keep them in harmonious balance.

The overall experience for those receiving acupuncture treatments can vary greatly. Most report feeling very relaxed during the treatment and many fall asleep. Some find the treatments to be very invigorating and energizing. Almost all report decreased stress and improved well-being. Interestingly, it is rare that a patient reports overall discomfort or pain associated with the treatments, even if they went in with a good deal of concern or fear over the idea of needling. Whatever the case, it is worth looking into further if you are interested in this traditional form of healing. Call or email today for a free informational consult with one of our acupuncturists.

Dr. Cait is from a small town in Wisconsin. Growing up in the country, taking care of horses and other animals, gave her a unique perspective on the world. That upbringing and experience made her aware early on of the importance of self-management, body-awareness and empowerment. “It is up to us to take care of our bodies and minds – to move and nourish ourselves in order to optimally experience a life of our own creation.”

She believes that movement is essential. As a lifelong athlete and competitor who excelled in multiple sports at all levels of her education, it has always been important to Dr. Cait to feel connected and at home in her body. She knew she wanted to help others find, understand and harness that connection to Self as well. And that led her to chiropractic school.

“I want to help people recognize what’s going on in their own bodies and help them learn ways to speak to it. I am passionate about women’s health and am currently loving the work I’m doing with pregnant and postpartum patients. It is so important to empower and support women on their journey through motherhood . Why I love and think it is crucial to get your kiddos adjusted, is to help them reach their innate potential. I help people through chiropractic by allowing their bodies to be free of interferences which allows connection to happen. I also love partnering with athletes who are working towards a goal or recovering from an injury. In addition to manual and Activator adjustments, Dr. Cait offers kinesiology taping, cupping and myofascial release as well as craniosacral technique as part of her treatment plans. She is Webster Certified and offers prenatal, postpartum and pediatric chiropractic care. “I love to learn and use my curiosity and solution-based problem solving skills to grow and evolve my practice. It’s helpful to have diverse training so that I have a larger variety of tools to pull from in order to provide the best care to my patients.”

Dr. Cait is also trained in DNS. DNS stands for Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization; a manual and rehabilitative approach to optimize the movement system based upon the scientific principles of developmental kinesiology. Basically, it’s recognizing the importance of moving in stages, step-by-step, like we did as infants, all learning to move in the first few years of life. It’s a rehabilitation approach used to stimulate movement control centers in the brain and nervous system to activate how our bodies were meant to move. It’s all about intentional movement, mindfulness and body-awareness.

She completed her Level 2 Reiki training in June. “We all have an energy we give and receive, and if patients are interested in Reiki or energy work, I am happy to incorporate what feels appropriate into our work together.”

Dr. Cait currently sees patients at our Linden Hills location.

Andrea is National Board certified and licensed by the State Medical Board to practice acupuncture medicine. She has established her career and reputation through years of experience treating clients in a wide variety of settings including her own private practice.

Her experience has given her the necessary tools and wisdom to treat a wide variety of patients. Andrea works with people of all ages and a broad range of physical and emotional symptoms including pain, internal imbalances with digestion, respiration, the nervous system, reproduction, anxiety and depression. She assists people as they face the transitions that life presents at all stages of growth and aging. Something Andrea is enjoying about her practice currently is the resiliency she sees around her. “We are all learning how to care for ourselves and each other in new ways.”

When working with Andrea, patients can expect careful listening and inquiry to build an accurate picture or what they’re experiencing. She uses her gentle and versatile application of training and experience to address the whole person.

“I offer an additional lens through which to make sense of your symptoms and experiences. Change is constant and it helps to think of your health as a 3D puzzle where there are many ways to support the integrity of your experience and for you to flourish.”

With her patient’s needs, goals and comfort level in mind, Andrea’s treatments address the causes of underlying imbalances in the whole system that affect their quality of life, sleep, ability to connect with others and to pursue what is important to them. Her work, while dynamic, broad and expansive, is individualized to meet the needs of her patient.

Andrea is happy to be working at SuNu because practicing as a part of a holistic collaborative offers the opportunity to learn from one another, put values into practice, and offer the best care everyone is capable of.“

As a practitioner of traditional medicine from a culture that is not my own, I acknowledge cultural appropriation has happened and still happens in the health and wellness field. I am committed to educating myself about structural and systemic racism (including when it targets people of East Asian and Pacific Island descent) and working to make changes. I hope to exercise grace and openness when it comes to my own mistakes so I can learn and adjust.

I am drawn to this work in East Asian Medicine for its depth of historical efficacy and versatility. And for it’s comprehensive approach to the human experience, healing and adaptation to ongoing changes. I am deeply grateful and feel privileged to have learned from these teachers of East Asian descent. I continue to work and study in an effort to practice this medicine in a way that it was intended.”

Rachael is a Level II Usui Reiki Practitioner offering services at our Linden Hills location. She is passionate about growth, self-awareness, deepening love, and intentional, conscious living. She brings that passion to her practice in order to create a unique and personalized experience for every client. Her education and experience have given her the necessary tools and wisdom to treat a wide variety of issues. Rachael has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology, is a Level 2 Usui Reiki Practitioner and is a certified Institute of Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, & NBC-HWC Board Certified Health Coach Reiki is a non-invasive type of energy healing. It’s based around the belief that energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or even emotional pain. In time, these energy blocks can cause illness. Reiki aims to help the flow of energy and remove blocks. Practitioners believe that Reiki can improve the flow of energy around and within the body and enable relaxation, relieve pain, speed healing and reduce symptoms of illness. While Reiki is non-invasive, it is not without sensation. Moving energy can create a beautiful, peaceful experience, but it can also cause discomfort, vulnerability and emotional discovery. Clients should be ready for both. Rachael is eager to support the experience each client has and walk with them on their journey. “This work is so individualized. It’s different every time, with every client. And it’s meant to be that way because we are all unique. What we need, what we discover, who we are is our own. So a one-size-fits-all treatment can’t yield lasting results. That’s one of the things I find most fascinating about Reiki and energy work - it works for you, not the other way around.”

A session with Rachael will be an intentional experience. She and SuNu offer a safe space for release. Clients may experience crying, laughing, sensations, imagery, colors, etc. Rachael’s main goal is to hold space for clients and allow them to identify and feel into whatever they are working through or processing at that time. She invites clients to encourage (self) awareness, lean into more intentional living and cultivate stronger connections between mind, body and soul. When Rachael isn’t at SuNu you’ll probably find her in the kitchen. “I love, love, love to cook - it is one of my favorite ways to express my creativity.” She also loves the outdoors and fresh air - “windows are open in my house year round (even if it’s just a crack”). Rachael says, “I firmly believe that Reiki and Breathwork have both saved and changed my life. I am thrilled to be offering and introducing Reiki to SuNu and the entire community. Come visit me in Linden Hills and let’s start your journey together.”
